Academic Advisory Council (AAC)
The following individuals make up our Academic Advisory Council:
- Professor S. Gopinathan, AAC, ChairmanProfessor S. Gopinathan, AAC, Chairman
AIMT Pte Ltd appoints Professor S. Gopinathan to be the Independent Chair of the Academic Advisory Committee. In a career spanning four decades, he has been actively involved in teacher education in Singapore and has served as Associate Dean, Office of Education Research (OER), Head, Department of Comparative Studies, Head, NIE Centre for Educational Research, Dean, School of Education and Dean, Foundation Programmes (initial teacher training). He is currently Vice Dean (Policy) at the Centre for Research in Pedagogy and Practice at the National Institute of Education. He has served on numerous Ministry of Education review committees, including the Thinking Schools Learning Nation and Junior College-Upper Secondary Review Committee. He is currently a board member of the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and an Advisor to the Singapore Teachers Union. Professor Gopinathan has written and lectured extensively on education reform, language in education issues, higher education and in teacher education. His papers and edited volumes are key references for students of education in Singapore and comparative education internationally. His collaborative work includes participation in the South East Asian Research Review and Advisory Group (SEARRAG) and in a Six- Nation Education Research Project which included USA and China. He was founding editor of the Singapore Journal of Education and with Professor Allan Luke, currently edits the Asia Pacific Journal of Education.
Professor Gopinathan was also involved in setting up the Singapore Centre for Teaching Thinking, the Principals Executive Centre and is also a founder member of the Educational Research Association of Singapore. He served over two decades as the Chairman of the National Book Development Council of Singapore. He has also served as a consultant for the World Bank and the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Open University, Sri Lanka. He is currently involved in projects to establish teacher training facilities in Abu Dhabi and in Indonesia. In 2000, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumunus Award by SUNY Buffalo and in 2001, the Singapore government Public Administration Medal (Silver) for services to education.

Professor Chua Soo Jin joins as an independent member of the Academic Advisory Committee. Prof Chua graduated with a B.Eng (Hons) from the University of Singapore in 1974 and his Ph.D. from the University of Wales, United Kingdom in 1977. In 1978, he worked for the Standard Telecommunications Labs, Harlow, UK. In 1981, he spent a year at the Fraunhofer Institute of Semiconductor Technology, Munich under a German Exchange Scholarship (DAAD). He was a Visiting Fellow of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science in 1988 and of the British Council in 1990. He was Assistant Director of the Institute of Microelectronics from 1991 to 1995.
Currently, he is Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), National University of Singapore (NUS), Deputy Director of the Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA) and Director of the Centre for Optoelectronics. He is also the Deputy Executive Director of the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). His research area is in optoelectronics and has published over 147 papers in international journals. He has published an undergraduate textbook on Mathematical Physics (MacMillan, 1996) together with Prof Ghatak.
Prof. Chua is Sr. member of IEEE. He served as Chairman of IEEE, Singapore Chapter from 1984 to 1986 and as Chairman of Education Committee, Region 10 from 1987 to 1988. He has received a number of awards for research and teaching and has consulted extensively for industry in the field of optoelectronics.

Dr Seah Kar Heng joins as an independent member of the Academic Advisory Committee. Dr Seah is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NUS. He has been lecturing in NUS since 1983. His areas of research include metal cutting, metal matrix composites, new materials, cryogenic treatment of materials, and corrosion of materials. In the area of teaching, he has given lectures on mechanical engineering design, materials selection, engineering statistics, manufacturing, mechanics of machines, workshop technology, statics and dynamics, automotive engineering and race car engineering. He is currently the Supervisor of the Design Lab in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as well as Hall Master of Raffles Hall. Outside NUS, he has conducted many professional short courses for practicing engineers on Materials Selection and Manufacturing Technology, and has been consultant for military and civilian projects.
A former Associate Director of the NUS Centre for Development of Teaching and Learning, Dr Seah has a keen interest in pedagogy and has for many years been regularly receiving various awards for good teaching, including the prestigious NUS Outstanding EducatorĄ¯s Award in 2003. Apart from research papers on his technical specialization, he has also written several articles on pedagogy and related topics.
Dr Seah has been supervising the NUS Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) race car project since its inception in 2001.
- Associate Professor Arthur Lee Gilbert, AAC, Member (Business and Management Studies)Associate Professor Arthur Lee Gilbert, AAC, Member (Business and Management Studies)
Professor Arthur Lee Gilbert joins as an independent member of the Academic Advisory Committee. Professor Gilbert is an associate professor, Professorial Fellow at Nanyang Business School, NTU. He is also an Associate Director at Information Management Research Centre.
A former Director of MBA (International Business and Management of Information Technology) Programmes and Regional Advisory for Technology Transfer with United Nations Secretariat (based in Thailand). At Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration, he was a Fellow and Research Associate of the Future Information Systems Faculty and Kennedy School of Gevernment Strategic Computing Program. Other Director positions held at National University of Singapore (Institute of System Science ¨C Postgraduate Education Research), Regional Information Systems (Intergovernmental Data Centre), Office of Technical Services (Data Center) and Senior Consultant role at SRI International.
On research specialization, many of his refereed journals and invited papers are published.
- Ms Teo Poh Kheam. AAC, Member (Hospitality Management)Ms Teo Poh Kheam. AAC, Member (Hospitality Management)
Ms Teo Poh Kheam joins as an independent member of the Academic Advisory Committee. Ms Teo held senior management positions in the Singapore Hotel Association and its training subsididary from July 1981 to June 2004 when she retired as the Assistant Chief Executive. She was, however, retained as the organisationĄ¯s Consultant from 2004 to 2006.
Ms Teo played a pivotal role in the establishment of the AssociationĄ¯s hotel school. Being a key member of the pioneer team that set up the school, she was instrumental in charting the growth of a fledgling hotel school and leading it to where and what it is today.
She holds a BachelorĄ¯s of Arts from the University of Singapore, a MBA from McGill University (Canada) and a MA, Education from George Washington University (USA). She also attended the 6-week Professional Development Programme at Cornell University. Prior to her retirement, she embarked on a course in Law and was awarded the LLB (Hons), University of London in 2007.
The scope of the AAC is as follows:
- To consider for approval new program proposals and major revisions and periodically to review existing programs.
- To review & recommend policies concerning selection, admission, accreditation, assessment, re-enrolment and progression of students including course entry & lecturer requirements (if such requirements are not specified by partner institutions) & advise for improvement.
- To advise on the on-going review and development of the curriculum and the introduction of new courses.
- To advise on the appointment of Course Co-ordinators who set tests/examination papers and major assessment tasks, monitor marking of scripts and recommend student grades on the completion of the course.
- To review & advise on the student assessment and academic standards to ensure that they are consistent with the approved guidelines.
- To approve the membership and define the roles of Examination Board members.
- To review the quality of service delivery & feedback, adequacy of facilities for teaching & learning & advise for improvement - including annual academic audit review reports from overseas partners.
- To review & advise on the allocation of funds targeted for the support of teaching and learning initiatives.
- To review & advise on the operation of procedures for ensuring academic quality, integrity and security of assessment tasks and results.
- To monitor & advise on the policies and activities directed to continuous improvement in education.
