There’s this massive misconception about the future of ITE students and how their career prospects are extremely limited with just a NITEC or Higher NITEC. It’s just not true.
Don’t let social stigma stop your ambition, or hamper your future. It’s entirely reasonable for people to go on to achieve their own form of success in their own form, along their own path.
Here are 3 things you should know.
1. In 2013, nearly half of all Singaporeans between the ages of 25 and 44 have at least a degree
We are not kidding. Check out the data above from Singapore Statistics. This means that to effectively compete for the ‘middle’ class jobs, you would need to have some sort of higher qualification. This is a scary thought because there are many economies around the world that have come to an economic stand for one simple reason – too many degree holders. For reference, the United Kingdom began their economic slow down once that number reached 3 in 10; Singapore is now 5 in 10. It’s scary – but it’s the truth.
2. You are actually a lot closer to a degree than you think.
In today’s world of higher education, vocational qualifications get a ton of respect. Why? Because as we’ve seen above, there are too many people pointing fingers to do things, and not enough people to do them. We need people who GET. THINGS. DONE.
Changes in higher education policy recognize that and many UK and Australian universities could give you as much as one year of exemptions from your degree for holding a relevant qualification from ITE and some high quality work experience (provided you’re applying to a relevant course).
For example, a Higher Nitec in Electronics applying to an Engineering Degree in Electronics with 2-3 years of experience working as a technician.
Grades matter too so barely scraping through is not a great idea.
3. Degrees are not for everyone.
As we speed towards the information age, there is a gold mine to be found in people who can roll their sleeves up and get into the gritty details to solve technical problems on the ground. While the degree holders fantastic with theoretical concepts, sometimes they’re just too far away from feeling the heat on the floor. Besides behind every great engineer is an army of technicians who made that dream come true and without them it would be just another design on a useless piece of paper.
If the time is right for you and you feel that a degree would be able to add significant value to your career, take a look around and see what options you have. Asking is free, but we are all going to have to work hard for our future.
